Hope By His Light

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, January 22, 2020

Today’s Text: John 8:12-20

Key Verse: John 8:12 (ESV): ”Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

A group of students once did an experiment in which they placed rats in a tank of water and placed the tank in a totally dark room; and monitored them with video equipment. The rats swam for some hours but all gave up and died. They placed another set of rats in a tank of water and placed in a lighted room; and all rats survived. Their hypothesis was that light gives hope.

Among the joys and blessings of the gospel is that when it penetrates a heart, the whole life is lighted up with hope. Light stands for spiritual illumination and truth. It encompasses all that is pure, good, and holy, and is opposed to the evil and lostness of darkness. Davidic revelation of how God's Word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path in Psalms 119:105 is a testimony that light guides us throughout life.

In today’s text, and in John 9:5 Jesus said: I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life because He doesn’t want us to miss out in the essence of the hope He gives to all that trust in Him. Just as the morning sun gives brighter hope to people, Jesus lights up our day and life if we believe and follow Him.
