I Shall not Want: Introducing the Year to Overflow (Part 2)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, January 2, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalms 23:1 (NLT): “The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.”

Such a great blessing to have this psalm put the matter of man’s basic need first.  Naturally, man’s most marked interest is in our basic needs. We must have food, clothing, and shelter to survive. If any one of these basic needs is not met, we just cannot survive. The needs are even more than the above three: we also need air, water, and sleep. This king of Israel who has been an experienced shepherd-boy draws from the images he is familiar about to teach us how our true Shepherd provides for all we ever needed as men. The psalmist assures us that e e do not have to be worried about anything as long as the Lord is our shepherd.

The strongest point of this key verse is the personal affinity with the Lord. Each person that will enjoy such peace and blessing from the Lord must have this Psalmist’s kind of personal relationship with God. Except he is your Lord and God, you may not have the confidence to personalize Him as your shepherd. And as such, you may not have David's kind of confidence in God's grace and care. A sense of personal relationship with God alone is sufficient to give us peace of mind, and full satisfaction of the care that comes from the great shepherd of our soul. As a shepherd, the Lord provided for His people through the wilderness, and He is providing for us still each day. Therefore let us grow in this carefree trustfulness in His love and care as we journey through the new year.

Quote for the Day: “Christians can have no want because apart from God’s guardianship in all circumstances, His providence is unfailing.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being the Creator of all things and also the Sustainer. You uphold, direct, and govern all creatures. O Lord, God of Providence, please lead me in your wisdom; lead me into fruitfulness; and lead me into freedom in your Spirit — in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
