In Self, Nothing; In Christ, Everything

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, July 26, 2023

Today’s Text: Matthew 5:1-12

Key Verse: Matthew 5:5 (ESV): “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

When a person experiences the finished work of Christ, one of the marks is that his adamic nature called self takes on an irreversible diminishing value. While it is not dead, it is undeniably put under as the believer is redefined by the grace given through Christ. One of such grace is the blessing described by our Lord in today’s text—meekness.

After conversion, the Holy Spirit produces a meek spirit by which our attitude towards God and fellow men is redefined. We become meek towards God in submission to all of His dealings with us, even when they seem to cause some pain. And we become meek towards other people in willingness to bear injuries, forgive injuries, and returning good for evil. Of such virtue, the world thinks  you are a loser and a fool; but to Jesus, you’ve got the whole world for a reward.

Yes, the world expects the opposite: they think that when you are meek, you get nowhere. They think everyone takes you for a ride, deprive, trample or ignores you. And as such you may feel denigrated; but Jesus lets us see the lucrative side of meekness when we are able to become nothing to our selfish feelings, and all things for the sake of Christ. Having received so much grace, let us put on the seed of meekness—bearing patiently with their hurtful actions; and dealing gently with their failures.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please fill me up with the fruit of Your Holy Spirit so that I increase in all good works towards You and diminish in all the images of selfish ego — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
