Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, January 18, 2022
Today’s Text: Psalm 16:1-11
Key Verse: Psalm 16:11 (ESV): “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.“
Humanity is always in search of one thing: religion refers to it as a being; moralists think it should be in the civility of character; philosophers refer to it as the“highest good;” sociologists think of it in terms of a person’s worth and happiness. Ascetic folks claim that one goal of every man is peace. Unfortunately, all these claims and thoughts lead to deeper vexation of spirit. But there is a one sure path to man’s needed highest good. It is not to be found within the four walls of ascetic life; no, not in religion or dogmatism nor in social science or moral philosophy. It is not in political science or in the hands of governments. It is found in nowhere else but with God, and in God alone.
That one thing, David says, is the presence of God in a life. When God is with us, we find the highest good; reach the highest point; walk in the brightest light; find the deepest peace; bask in the highest pleasures; and find the highest unexplainable joy. This is something to be desired with every zeal. And no human faculty or philosophy can avail in this regard. To find that one thing, we have to seek God. David prayed to God to show him the path to His presence. He knows that God alone is able to help man find true answer. Our instinct may offer some speculations; our education may prompt us in some positive directions; even our religion may offer some brilliant rays of hope; but the one and only thing everyone needs is the presence of God—and that only comes through knowing Jesus Christ, who is His true revelation. It is in Him that we find life. It is by Him we are given joy in the presence of God. And it is only through Him we can make it to a glorious eternity with God.
Quote for the Day: “The pleasure and joy sought by a Christian transcends the physical. It looks forward to the afterwards: the unending joy in God's presence.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please make known to me the path of life; fill me with joy in your presence. Help me make it to the eternal pleasures in your presence — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
