Today’s Text: 1 Peter 2:1-12
Key Verses: 1 Peter 2:9 (ESV): “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
A forester once found an eaglet that had fallen out of his nest and took him home to raised him in his yard. Though he was by nature the King of birds, the eaglet was raised along with other birds. So he soon learned to eat and behave like all the domestic chickens around. He never learned he could fly nor ever realized his identity. He completely lost touch with the fact of being an eagle. So, often, people would try to mock him by tossing him toward the sky, but though he was now a grown eagle, as long as he doesn’t know who he was, he happily returns to the brood of chickens.
The idea of “but you are” in the opening clause of our text indicates what was in the mind of Peter. He wants all the convert aliens to come into full realization of their triumph, their happier, better and more splendid state as God’s new (spiritual) Israel. This elder apostle, Peter had to tell them in verse 5 that they are also like living stones, built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. It is important we know who we are. Peter made a direct quote from Exodus 19:6 to stir our sensitivity to our place as priests and royalties in God’s organised empire.
As for the eagle, a naturalist had to train him by constantly taking him to the cliff of the rock to toss him up; and whisper you are an eagle, spread your wings and fly” to him. Many days and weeks, he flip-flopped back to the chicken flock. Until he finally stretched his wings with a triumphant cry, and soared away. Many believers in Christ are probably like that eaglet: living the Christian life with a completely lost or forgotten identity; not realizing who they are or who chose them. O how God wants us to know who we are in Christ! — Which except we know, we cannot fill our place of proclaiming His excellencies on earth. What Israel represents under the Law cannot even match what we, the new Israel, represent under the Gospel.
Quote for the Day: “People identified by names, but are differentiated by character. That is why the stream water loses its identity when it joins the ocean." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please teach and help me to stop trying to find my identity in anything other than You. I am Your child, a child of the King and a citizen of Your Kingdom. Stir me, not just to stand within Your courts to praise You, but that I may proclaim Your excellencies to others to see — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
