Knowing Jesus

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, June 23, 2022

Today’s Text: John 14:1-14

Key Verse: John 14:9 (ESV): “Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

When it comes to things of God, the natural man is mostly slow and slack. It is not easy for him to comprehend spiritual things. In today’s text Philip thought he already knew Jesus; whereas he did not realize that He (Jesus) represents the revealed mystery of God. It is unfortunate, how many so called Christians, today, also feel troubled, seek help, or seek God where He is not. Our lack of knowledge of who Jesus is makes us live troubled lives, and force us to grope under fear of evil spirits and darkness. Jesus, the final revelation of God stands with His church; yet, the response of many of us today is like Philip’s unguarded moment — “show us the father?!”

What are we looking for? When shall we quit doubting Him and disparaging Him in our hearts and acts? Can’t we see how He is always there with us?! He is the same yesterday, today and forever. His power is never diminished. And, He reveals Himself in diverse ways to whoever seek Him. Unfortunately, our hearts are so troubled and perplexed like the two brothers in Jesus’ fourth post-resurrection appearance on the road to Emmaus. Whereas Jesus walked with them along their way; whereas they were consumed by passion for him; they still did not know who He was nor believe His promise for resurrection.

What about you? And what about me? Do we know Jesus enough to believe His presence with us during these perilous days? Do we know Him enough to alley all fears of evil and darkness, or are we still looking ahead for a different revelation? Knowing Jesus is trusting Him regardless of what life brings. Knowing Him gives confidence over all situations that terrify us. Knowing Jesus is seeing less of the devil and seeing more of Him. Knowing Jesus is never allowing things created by Him to unsettle our faith in God.

Quote for the Day: “If men who know their God are strong for divine exploits; we already know why there’s so much weakness in the acclaimed body of Christ today." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, Your word tells us that You reveal Yourself to those who seek You, please give me a hunger to read your Word and to seek to know you more each day, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
