Today’s Text: John 2:1-11
Key Verse: John 2:9 (NKJV): “And the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside.”
A giant engine of a vessel failed. The captain and his team tried their luck with several renowned engineers but none of them could solve the problem. So, an old man who had been fixing engines for many years was recommended and brought in. After inspecting the huge engine for a few minutes, the old man pulled a hammer out of his tool bag and gently tapped on a specific spot in the engine. And immediately the engine sprung back into life, and the engine was fixed. The old man then issued an invoice for the amount of $10,000 for the job. However, “This is a rip-off.” the owner exclaimed. “What did he do that should cost so much?” he continued. “He hardly did anything!” when the owner asked the old man for a breakdown of his bill. This is what his itemized bill reads: Tapping with a hammer: … $1, and knowing where to tap: … $9,999.
Effort has been overrated in today's world. Don't get me wrong: we must put in as many efforts as we can, but understanding what the Bible means by “the race is not to the swift or the strong” may help us. Secularists will zero in on the significance of knowing how to deploy efforts for desired and abiding results. Albert Einstein said, "The only source of knowledge is experience." But as believers in Christ, we know just where to tap the needed strength, wisdom, help, strength, and solutions we seek in any desperate situation. Ours is not a “don’t work hard, work smart“ mantra; but knowing how to turn to God and find needed help is what often makes the difference. The spiritual import of today’s text is not in or about a ceremony, but about always reaching for Christ to bless any situation of/in our life. There was a crisis in their life. They needed a solution, and were all confused about it. They were a thin line into shame, but Mary was there: she knows where to tap. Except we go to Jesus, life slips easily offside. Except we go to Him, we cannot turn our ordinary into extraordinary.
Quote for the Day: “If you master your way to God and learn how to tap heaven’s resources, you can keep experts under the impression that you have it all kept in reserve.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Help me dear Lord. For I acknowledge my total dependence on You at every moment in my life. May I never trust in efforts; but always learn to run to You and rest in You, in Jesus' name. Amen.
I welcome you to join our midweek services tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept 8: Scripture Pasture (an Interactive Bible Study) by 7.00 pm CST; and Friday Power Contact (a prayer teleconference) by 7.00 pm CST.
