Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, February 11, 2022

Today’s Text: Matthew 23:37-39

Key Verse: Matthew 23:37 (ESV): “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!”

Referencing the stoning of Zechariah the son of Jehoiada in 518 BC, and the foretelling of the sufferings and persecution which are in store for His chosen ones such as Stephen, James, and the rest of us, Jesus lamented over the state of the nation. He was exceedingly moved at the thought of the calamities coming upon them. He saw, with deep sorrow, how they shall not retain God in their knowledge; how they shall be given over to their reprobate minds; and the unavoidable consequences of their rebellion and disobedience. The Lord lamented because He saw that by reason of our choices, corruption, and rebellion, the city of peace shall dim out into violence, war, restiveness, and confusion.

Brethren, like Jerusalem, our cities fail to be the joy, the salt, and the light of the world they are called to be. Whether you are looking at Nigeria or America, these nations fit into this prophetic lamentation for becoming a cause of hissing among nations. All cultural heritage, values, and sense of right are shattered and ruined. And all the places that God had chosen to put his name are now dens of spoilers and robbers. The repetition of O Jerusalem symbolically speaks of our Lord's affection and passion for the people. It brings the meaning of the name, essence of dignity and privileges, and the divine design to focus on — of which they are found wanting. Hence, the strong disapproving lamentation — not as in judgment; but so that we may return to the blessings we are missing. In this lamentation, Jesus is calling us to a realization of who we are, or are supposed to be. He is calling us back to our blessing and our safety. If we dare to draw near Him, He will draw near us and embrace us again.

Quote for the Day: “If our generation could see the heart of Jesus Christ; we would see how filled it is with profound sacred emotion and empathy for our lostness.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please provoke within me a thirst for you. Give me a genuine desire to seek you and follow you. Let me life bring you joy and glory — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
