Law of Increase

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, September 3, 2023

Today’s Text: Proverbs 11:24-26

Key Verse: Proverbs 11:24 (KJV): There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

Once, a good farmer loved the Lord and believed in giving and generosity, and yet remained prosperous. People cannot understand why he gives more than the rest of them, and yet always has greater prosperity. Hear what his simple explanation was to them: “I keep shoveling into God’s bin, and God keeps shoveling more and more into mine, and God has the bigger shovel.”

In the vanity of the human mind, especially one has his mind sold to the pursuit of possession and wealth, he’d think that grabbing and hoarding should make him wiser and richer; and that scattering should tend to poverty. But no because in the spiritual equation of resources, withholding does not lead to increase. As a matter of fact, it decreases your worth, value and wealth. This is also true in the business world. To excel and prosper, you’ve got to invest a your resources.

Today’s text presents us two improbable and surprising paradoxes to this effect. The act of scattering is used as an allegory for giving liberally to the poor; and watering from a fountain, which, when it pours forth its waters, it is instantly filled again. Generosity is a spiritual path to thrifty spending while hoarding is an unthrifty savings. Any wise outlay of God’s financial or material resource into kingdom use or humanity are sure forms of thrift.

Rich people know a secret: increasing your capital depends on observance of certain laws of prudence. Therefore, the highest point of this text is that benevolence is lending to the Lord, and stinginess is a high path to poverty. The reason is simple: It stints the energies of your resources. God wants us to desist from our false and exaggerated views of the value of money and matter. The truest value or happiness of wealth is in its outward expressions.

Quote for the Day: “At all standards, spiritual or physical, generosity is a treasure. God‘s blessings and man’s friendship will always be toward them that are generous.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, true blessings come from you. You are our example O Lord: You love the whole world and gave You only begotten Son. Please make me a channel of blessing to my world— in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
