Led in the Righteous Path: Introducing the Year to Overflow (Part 5)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, January 5, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalm 23:3 (ESV): “He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

One of the greatest weapons of Satan against humanity—to deter and debase us—is getting us to do wrong things. He knows the power and liftings that we enjoy when we walk in the right paths. He knows that with God and right living, there is no half way: it’s got to be right. Proverbs 14:34 tells us that what exalts a nation is righteousness, but what brings reproach to any people is sin. God does not operate a standard of two alternatives. Righteousness is walking in the right path: it is simply the quality or state of being upright and justifiable. It is important that we realize that it is the culmination of our crookedness — not being upright with God and ourselves that degrades and weakens our human communities and nations.

In this simple verse, there are two assumed causes and their effects: we can let God lead us in His right paths and find restoration for our souls; or we can tend to our own paths and continue in deterioration. It is crucial we determine which of these two causes or effects we would gladly live by this new year. We cannot afford to keep going our own ways this year and expect to enjoy God’s pleasant promises for His people's welfare.

But it is great joy to know that we can still enjoy God’s fullest restoration. God is able and willing to relieve, restore, revive and quicken our weakened and forlorn souls if we allow Him to lead us back to the paths of righteousness. Only He can lead us back. We are too away, or lost. The only way to safety, is the paths directed by, and/or pleasing to God. Our secret code is to retrace the paths to Jesus, who alone is LORD—and who alone leads to safety.

Quote for the Day: “God does not operate a standard of two alternatives: His precepts are perfect, and His testimony simple.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please lead me, I pray, in your right paths; make your way straight before me. Let your hand lead me, and your right hand uphold me. Lord, see if there be any grievous way in me, and restore me to the way everlasting—in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
