Let Not Your Good Be Evil Spoken Of

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, April 23, 2021

Today’s Text: Romans 14:13-23

Key Verse: Romans 14:16 (AMP) — “Therefore do not let what is a good thing for you [because of your freedom to choose] be spoken of as evil [by someone else].

Every Jew, from the days of Moses, adheres to strict dietary regulations: a tradition that survives through exiles, the intertestamental period, even to the era of the Apostles. They have been commanded by Moses to refrain from eating certain unclean animals. In like manner, each one of us also approach Christ's grace with several yokes of ancestral restraints. But this scripture brings us to a new light about what Jesus means to us all. The Apostle explains that Jesus had perfectly fulfilled all qualification Law on behalf of all humanity, and had done away with their implecations by His crucifixion and resurrection.

He nailed them to His cross so that they no longer apply to anyone who embraces His finished works of grace. However, the Apostle Paul was admonishing Christians that, though they have been liberated from unhelpful laws, they should show consideration for others who were still under such yokes. God's people should be able to eschew anything including their rights, ego, action, inaction, taste and desires for the sake of others, and their love for Christ. For instance, your choices or actions may be good and right — just like in Christ, there were no longer any "unclean" foods — but for the sake of others who might miscontrue your action and inaction, you are admonished to willingly give those things up; especially things not pertaining to the very essence of belief and salvation.

Don't get this wrong: we can not be menpleasers. No! We cannot even please everybody. I have learnt that no matter what you do, somebody who is personally not happy will not be happy. But, we must be Christlike in all we do. So that just like Christ denied Himself for our sake, we as well must deny ourselves of any indulgence for the sake of our brethren. We know that no matter what we do, we cannot prevent froward tongues from speaking evil; but as much as it lies within our power, we must give them no occasion. We must deny ourselves at all times so that we may not soil the good name of Christ.

Quote for the Day: “Christians should willingly eschew things belonging to their rights which give the appearance of wrong to others.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Help me dear Lord, so that no man despises me; but make me an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, and in purity, in Jesus's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
