Today’s Text: Matthew 5:13-16
Key Verses: Matthew 5:16 (WEB) — “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

As Christ's disciples, we are light-bearers sent by the Light Himself. Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. He speaks the words in today's text as the Light, commissioning us, His disciples, to carry His reflection wherever we go, in whatever we are, do, and say to represent Him, and be His reflection in and to a dark world. Indeed, of His birth, it was foretold that out of Bethlehem shall rise a great light for the people who sit in darkness. That Light has come: He has both lighted and commissioned us to show Him to our darkened word. He told us that people do not light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand, so that it gives light to all who are in the house. To break this down, let us ask ourselves, Have you ever lit a lamp and then hide it under a couch? Well you would think that would not make any sense; but that is just what most of us do. We have almost all stucked the light of the gospel under our church pews. Our Lord drew an important image from objects familiar to all the hearers. They were familiarwith the seven-branched candlestick of the Temple which they undoubtedly daily supplied with oil. They all use those types of lamps in their household, and none of them lights any of those and then puts it under a bushel.
Our Lord is putting forth the same challenge to us today: No doubt, He has commissioned us to light the world, but it is up to us to let that light shine rather than stay under our self nade hidden shades. The way we shine God's light is through our good works. Often, our flying reading of scriptures misleads us or breathes ambiguity on meaning. We do not simply set up light or lamp so that men may see the lamps on the stand. That's “the Pharisee” way of thinking. They make ostentatious prayers and almsgiving to be seen of men, and win their praise, but Jesus likened that to a good way to hide your lamp. We set up our light not for people to see the lamp but for them to see by it's light. Our light reveals our good works and reveals the Giver of the light in us. The hateful and darkened world should watch us live out our new life in Christ, and, in spite of their prejudices against us, still say: “See how these followers of Christ live out a life of love!” Will this not give glory to God? Sure, it will! That's just what Jesus means when He says by being shining light, people shall see our good works and then glorify our Father in heaven. When you live as a child of The Light, His reflection that will shine from your your life is what Jesus referred to as the “good works.” That is what Christ seeks from you.
Quote for the Day: ”How peaceful, lovely and God-glorifying would our world be if we run it on the shining light of Biblical Christian example?!” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for coming to the world as the Light. Please shine brightly through my lifeand teach me how to live so that my life will bring glory to You, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
