Lift your Eyes, not Your Heart

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, May 19, 2023

Today’s Text: Daniel 4:28-35

Key Verses: Daniel 4:34 (ESV): “At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever,

for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

and his kingdom endures from generation to generation.”

We serve the sovereign God who rule over everything, everyone, and every circumstance. He is timeless and changeless. Earthly kings and rulers act ruthless and unchecked; but they soon fade away — lose dominion, their reigns, and lives. Such men as Julius Caesar who fell in the hand of Brutus. What about Napoleon’s whose notable reign was neutralized by Waterloo. Herod, the Great was eaten by warms; his son Agrippa was brought down by age. Our God is the only dreaded eternal Sovereign that crowns kings but Himself is not crowned.

Nebuchadnezzar saw this light at eventide. But it was better late than never. And, it now remains for us to learn from him. God humbles men who puff in their spirit. He forces them to their knees. Let us learn from emperors, pharaohs, tyrants, dictators, nobles and great men. Let us give careful thoughts to scholars, philosophers, politicians and icons who have all come and gone while God remains the same. Let us not lift our hearts against the sovereign God. Let us give God the right place in our hearts.  Reference Him. Serve and honor Him in your heart and live. He sits upon His eternal throne, and rules the affairs of His people. Don’t wait till eventide.

Quote for the Day: An arrogant mortal before the immortal God is like one who mounts his umbrella under the shade of a canopy—he is either being deluded or deluding himself.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, meek and humble of heart, Hear me. Deliver me from the desire of being esteemed, and from the desire of being honored. Help me not to puff before You — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
