Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, February 29, 2020
Today’s Text: 1 John 3:1-6
Key Verse: 1 John 3:1 (DBT): ”See what love the Father has given to us, that we should be called the children of God. For this reason the world knows us not, because it knew him not.”
J. C. Watts Jr. had said that “compassion can’t be measured in dollars and cents. It does come with a price tag, but that price tag isn’t the amount of money spent. The price tag is love.” We often pride ourselves and measure love with what is given or received but love is deeper than that. Otherwise, men would not give so much in millions to charity and yet be full of untold hate for others different than them.
The opening word "behold" or “see” in our key verse calls our attention to God-kind of love. No doubt, it’s so great a love, but the invitation this time is not to its extent. We leave that to John 3:16. Here, we are called to pay attention to its "manner. The manner of true love is to eliminate difference—so that we should be called children of God. Love bestows both values and virtues on those to whom it’s given. God is Creator and we his creatures but he bestows his own likeness and brings us into full right of his Son. Would you ignore this? And shall we all learn from this?!
Quote for the Day: "We often give to diminish our object; but God gives to .dignify his object.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please fill me with so much love like yours, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
