Today’s Text: 2 Timothy 4:1-8
Key Verse: 2 Timothy 4:5 (KJV): “But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”
The words, “but watch thou in all things,” as it were, sum up all Apostle Paul’s last directions to Timothy, his spiritual son. Already, the elder apostle had admonished him to avoid vain arguments, to dwell on nothing but the simple word of truth, to avoid shun strife, and be gentle in all, and show himself as an example of the old paths that all the fathers of faith walked. There is an end for which he must be watchful in all these things: that end is to “make full proof of thy ministry.” It is so easy for an individual to lose their identity and forget who they are while engrossed with wrong things in/of life. Each of us are a bundle of different identities in one—we all have gender identity, professional identity, cultural identity, national identity, ethnic identity, religious identity, and spiritual identity. Each of this identities is symbiotic with who we are and do. That is, they represent who we are are what we do and who we are and what we do represent them.
The premise of this scripture is simple: to make full proof of your ministry, you must watch conscientiously over both yourself and flock. You must understand the importance of being awake, alert and watchful in all things. You must be careful to proof who you truly are before the watching world. Perhaps, we can learn from Fritz Kreisler, famous German violinist, who once had to make a full proof of who he was in a music store before the store owner who happened to recognize his violin and not his face. Fritz was in the man’s music store, where he was accused of being in possession of Fritz Kreisler’s violin. They would not believe his testimony that he was Fritz Kreisler until he played a piece he was well known for on the violin. They let him go because he had done what only Fritz Kreisler could do. No more can we convince the world until we make full proof of our identity in Christ.
Quote for the Day: “The world grapples a lot with what they have; but care much more about who you are. Indeed, we touch our age and move our generation by who we are rather than what we have.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You because my identity is in Your truth and love for me. Please help me to continue to discover myself, my desires, and joys in the things You've chosen for me and chosen me for. And please keep me from anything that keeps me from being who You want me to be — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayers,
