Today’s Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, June 4, 2019
Today’s Text: Isaiah 55:6-13
Key Verses: Isaiah 55:13 (ESV): “Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall make a name for the Lord, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”
Today’s text uses two metaphors to teach us that God can cause beauty and grace to flourished in ugly and painful situations. The metaphor of the briar and thistle is used to symbolize desolation. Those are weeds that thrived on the desolate walls of Babylon and Nineveh. They covered the land of Israel when the inhabitants were carried away captive. The metaphor of the cypress and myrtle trees teaches us that where thorns once encumbered our ground, God can cause roses to bloom again.
Ungodly men seem to cumber our age, occupying spheres, causing pain, and promoting evil. But if we seek the Lord and call upon him (vs. 6); instead of cynicism, hope and optimism will begin to emerge. Instead of rampant and unrestrained lust, pure love shall spring up.
This text pictures the desolate state of human hearts until the Gospel is allowed. However, anyone who grows tired of the evil within, longs for this kind of transformation, and seeks the Lord while He may be found will find God so near to cause a fresh plantings of grace to replace the thorns and aches of our sinful nature, and make all things new in our world.
Quote for the Day: “Transformed lifestyle is the mark of divine intervention, a living and lasting sign of God’s salvation.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, give me a new surge of hope that’ll blow away the evil cobwebs that keep cluttering my mind. Help me turn my eyes on you so that I can see you turn my heartaches in to full expression of joy in the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
