Meaningless Speculations

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 9, 2022

Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 1:1-11

Key Verse: 1 Timothy 1:4 (ESV): “Nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.

“The Antichrist’s appearance seen on a beach!” “Add certain numbers together and you could tell the end of the world!” Have you heard such words before? You may have been a victim of fables and meaningless speculations that the Bible warns us against. Before the days of Jesus down to those of the apostles, the Jews suffered the same fables and speculations. During the First Century, Jewish oral tradition continued to influence diverse succession of teachers who perpetuated lots of law handed down upon the lip. This gave rise to conflicting Rabbinic schools of thoughts and traditions that continued to supplement or replace what has been written. These tendencies continue even today. Our generation is being bombarded daily by myths and speculations about many different things and theories—about, the end time; the Antichrist, his marks and appearance; 5G network; COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination; the person of D. J. Trump; ongoing Russian-Ukrainian clash and its logical consequences.

For centuries speculations have been the strong weapon of manipulating and embellishing the truth in the minds of people. Perhaps, that’s why it is called endless genealogies — But the Bible warns us to be wary of fanciful interpretations and meaning of things. Paul admonished that such teaching should not be allowed in the Christian church. If allowed, the witness to the resurrection of Christ itself may then be misconstrued as a myth, truth would be unduly falsified, exaggerated, and disrupted. The church at large will be at a loss per the nature of truth, and the growth of faith will be under siege. Therefore, we who know God’s truth and have been set free by it are called to shun fables, babbling, and speculations.

Quote for the Day: “The narrow way to which Christians are called has never been and can never be consistent with narrow mindedness. Except we know the truth, we cannot be free indeed by it.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, gird our loins by your truth and strengthen our hearts with the confidence to defend the same — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.

Your Darling Bishop (DaBishop)
