Today’s Text: Acts 2:36-47
Key Verses: Acts 2:36–37 (NLT): “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!” Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?””

Today, the 4th of July, America is reminded of the struggles of godly men and women who founded this nation under God. There is no way to reflect on our independence without drawing closer to scriptural truths that led the desperate pilgrims to leave England via Mayflower in 1608, and to trust God for a new world. They sought a better world because the Church of England was corrupt beyond redemption and resisted reform. They were forced to secret places of holy cry for revival. So, they thirsted and hungered for a New World and Promised Land where they could worship freely. Whereupon the wind of God led them beyond their dream of Netherlands to cross the Atlantic to a place near the tip of Cape Cod, Massachusetts where they dropped anchor on November 21, 1620.
Revival story of the Pilgrims is like that of Pentecost. It brought about a sudden renewal in communities. Just like the earliest apostles, the 102 passengers and a crew of about 30 aboard the Mayflower had a renewed sense of love, unity, generosity, self-sacrifice, and a desire for corporate gatherings (Acts 2:42-47; 4:32-37). Revival is never isolated. It must pass beyond the pulpits to the pews and then bring indelible influence on the nation. God sends revival on His church to release the power of the Holy Spirit to transform both believers and their communities. Through revival, people sense the power of God and are called to prayer, repentance, and a new nation.
Revival brings a special outpouring of God’s blessing that leads to spiritual renewal of God’s people, conversion of sinners, and an emergence of a righteous nation under God. People witness the advancing tide of truth and so the public response is always “what shall we do?” And, it is through such cries that righteousness is restored, the nation is exalted, and honor is brought to God. As we celebrate this year’s independence, and I wish us Happy July 4th, I charge us to, like the pilgrims, quit false romance with the past. It is time to let God be paramount in our desires. Let us restore all our cultural, spiritual and moral values that secularism has pushed to the edges.
Quote for the Day: “Revival moved God’s people from a sense of lostness to a place where they seek grace from the Lord till He comforts them and speaks peace unto their land.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to rend our hearts. Turn us back to you with all of our hearts. Save our nation from becoming a reproach among the nations. Restore us of old and in your wrath remember mercy—in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
