More than Food and Clothes

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, March 5, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 12:22-28

Key Verse: Luke 12:22 (ESV) — “Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear."

Lack of contentment and life of covetousness are two things that drive humanity along the dangerous pathway of self destruction. These duo are the mothers of selfish use of materials and the curators of all abuses. And they give birth to unbridled and/or unreasonable anxious thought about temporal things. They wound us to our own destruction. That is why Jesus warns His disciples against these things. He wants His disciples to consider how pathetic a life is that makes food and clothes its chief thoughts. If you want to know the purpose of a thing; trust its creator. Don’t people trust manufacturers for their product’s manuals? Sure! Only Jesus fits that description when it comes to all matters of life and purpose. Being coeternal with God, all things were made by Him. So, He knows and reveals to us that our life is intended to be much more valued than how we all take it.

Looking at this scripture, it is time we ask ourselves: why do we value lower things as if they were higher, and smuggle things of greater values under the negligible? This is a question only God can help us answer correctly because it is, unfortunately, a disease nurtured by all humans. We all nurture thoughts on lesser things that put weights of anxiety on our hearts. If eating is not everything to a man, then he is likely a devotee to fashion. But seeing how great unnecessary heavy burden of care these impose on us, our Lord, through this text, teaches us a nobler way to live and see life. He reveals how we can live fuller and happier without being slaves to materials. He teaches us how to be on guard against low views of life. We must realize that no matter how anxious we are, and/or our worries make us do, we are still absolutely dependent on God, and both our sustenance and the length of our days rest on/with Him.

Quote for the Day: “Don’t get this twisted: God’s word is not the surest way to overcoming the self-consuming care called anxiety; it is the only way.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, teach me to put my hands in Yours. Help me trust myself to Your power and love, and trust You, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
