No Causeless Cause Shall Alight

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, January 9, 2022

Today’s Text: Proverbs 26:1-9

Key Verse: Proverbs 26:2 (ESV): “Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.

The extent to which this generation is buffeted by fear is alarming. We dread the evil eye and the undiscoverable wickedness in the hearts of our fellow men. Truth be told: what natural man will not be troubled by evil omens? Israel was troubled to think of the possible potency of Balaam’s curse if he ever placed it. Curses bring darkness, misfortune, calamity, and death. We know how entire humanity is brought under the curse of the law, which are laws of sin and death. But those who have been redeemed from the laws of sin and death have also been wholly redeemed from needless fears of the curse. Therefore, as God’s redeemed people, we have no more reason to be afraid of any lawful curse. They have been disabled by the same power that justifies us. The blood of Jesus Christ has made light of all weapons of our adversaries so that none of them can prosper against us.

Therefore, we are not given the spirit to fear the designs of the enemies. We are charged to face life with confidence in Christ's finished work. If we have been justified in/through Christ, every outstanding, portended, and the intended curse is already causeless and baseless. We remain under this order of covering as long as we remain in fellowship with Christ. Yes, indeed, no sin is found in us. If you are ever used to farming you may understand the allegorical description of “Like a sparrow in its flitting, and a swallow in its flight.” The emergence of sudden, unexpected calamity likable to unexpected lifting up of sparrows from tickets May no more be feared by us. They are needless. Just as Balak’s curses were causeless if Israel had no sin; all curses are baseless since each child of God has been justified in Christ.

Quote for the Day: “Rejoice, O Christian! No solemn, malicious, furious, spiritual, or legal woes can do thee any further harm. In Christ, thou art freed from the curse. Hallelujah!” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you because I am blessed indeed, and I cannot be cursed. I thank you because Your word declares anyone that curses me cursed and anyone that blesses me blessed. I am blessed beyond the curse — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
