Today’s Text: Isaiah 45:1-8

Key Verses: Isaiah 45:5 (NIV) “I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me.

I grew up in a generation in which owing an automobile was such a big deal. And people showed off their pride by inscribing messages on their mobilets, tricycles, motorcycles, wagons, lorries, vans and cars. They wrote all sorts of things including curses or responses to their detractors, rivals and opponents. But they also wrote things that showed their religion. One of the commonnest religious inscriptions back in the day was: “No king as God.” Indeed, who else can we liken to God. He is the only King that is not elected, selected or dethroneable by men. We all see how our elected kings and leaders betray us and lord it over us. They do anything to cringe their way to power; but once they got it, they trample us with the same power we give to them.

But God's kingship is altogether different. It is likeable to nothing within our political system and hierarchy. He (God) alone has particular care for/of us, regardless of who we are. God alone has particular interest in all, no matter how lowly a person is. He alone has sympathy for us in our trials; He alone has a definite purpose for every human soul; and His thoughts towards us is give us a future and hope. Search through all ages, you will find clement leaders; but find none like God.

King Xerxes was one of the most clement kings in Persian history. After his great military expedition, he traveled with his troops to Greece for a retreat aboarded a Phoenician ship. When a deadly storm rose up against them, the captain told Xerxes there was no hope unless the ship's load was substantially lightened. The king told his troops, "It is on you that my safety depends. Now let some of you show your regard for your king." A number of the men bowed to him and threw themselves overboard! When the ship made it safely to harbor. Xerxes immediately ordered that a golden crown be given to the pilot for preserving the king's life, and in the same hour, ordered him beheaded for causing the loss of so many Persian lives.

Look around you friends, and situations will confirm the truth of today's text: that there is no king as our God. We die for our king. They cannot bear to die for us. But Jesus demonstrated love so great by laying down His life for us. While we must not take the assertion of “no king as God” or the text as a comparative statement; for there is no ground of comparison between God and man; however, we must understand what “I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God “ means. It was used antithetically against the sea of polytheism of the day. Its use covers all that we may think of outside God. These include the dualism of Persia, the syncretism of Africa, the scenicism of the West, and the plurality of the postmodern world altogether. We could search through all ages and eternity, and find that there is none like our God. Therefore. He alone is worthy to be trusted and served.

Quote for the Day: “God is God. He is incomparable with, by, and to man.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, please forgive us whenever and wherever we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by which we liken you to your mortal creatures. We confess that You are above all, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers, I wish all Americans happy July 4:
