No Place for Two Opinions

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, March 13, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Kings 18:20-24

Key Verse: 1 Kings 18:21 — “Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing."

Eye-service in religious matter has been part of the human society for ages. It was rampant during the days of Elijah. Some Jews worshipped both God and Baal together because they wanted to please the prophet, and please Jezebel at the same time. Our generation is also between opinions. We give permission to plurality and inclusion because we want to obtain favour at the human-court. Our nation and people walk in the same kind of rebellion that led Israel into exile — the same made Jeremiah to say: “Has a nation ever changed its gods? (though they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.” (Jer 2:11) The words which God sent Elijah to Israel during his day come unequivocally to us too. God has and needs no addition. He is God by Himself, and perfectly so. And that which is perfect needs no addition.

Our cry for plurality reveals the divided nature of our hearts. But God is never in pieces. He is one infinite, one omnipotent one supreme, one omniscient, one all-sufficient God, and one incontrovertible God. A double minded person is unstable in all his ways: Our eagerness towards any addition to God only reveals our lusts It gives evidence to how unresolved, unstable, inconsistent, indifferent and unsteady we are. There is no place for lukewarm-ness before God. We cannot be both within and without. God never favors divided hearts. He blows out the lukewarm. The people could not say a word before Eijjah because there is nothing to do or say to justify the folly of plurality and neutrality. It is high time we repent of our fickle hearts, realize our guilt, and break down all altars we have erected to rival God in our hearts and lives.

Quote for the Day: “Our thoughts reveal our person. Thoughts of spiritual plurality reveals the shattered and divided nature of the heart.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, reveal yourself as you did in the days of Elijah so that out generation may know that you are God, and there is no one else beside you. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
