Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, August 12, 2021
Today’s Text: Matthew 26:36-46
Key Verse: Luke 19:42 (NLT): “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.”
When we see the crying of a child cry, we are touched because they come with a feeling of genuine sorrow. When we see a strong and brave man cry, we are moved by his cause. And when we see the creator of heaven and earth express deep sorrow, then all creation in every sphere and realm are in a very deep and sad state. Our Lord is always touched by the feelings of our infirmities. He wept over Tyre and Sidon; He wept over Jerusalem for denying its prophets; He was moved with compassion over the fainting crowd that was like sheep without a shepherd, and He wept over the unbelief of Mary at Lazarus’ death.
But this is a different occasion; and why should He ever express sorrow? He was welcomed triumphantly into Jerusalem, the same city he wept over for rejecting its prophets. The chanted Hossana and the very foundations of the city shook, but the people were only religiously moved, and spiritually lost. Indeed, Jesus likened the people to a whitewashed sepulcher, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. They all chant shalom and declare peace but were blinded to the peace of God. So, the Lord wished that they knew the way of peace.
Indeed, our generation shares a lot in common with them. We come so close to the prince of peace, yet we do not care to give Him a chance. We reject the very source of peace and embrace the things that tear us apart. Jesus is looking on us with deep sorrow, wishing O that we know: That we bring the consequences of our faults on ourselves. That God holds us accountable for what we refuse to see or are unable to see because of our sin. That the way of peace is hidden from our eyes because we do not retain God in our knowledge or yield to Him. O how the Lord wishes, today, that we all will repent and come to Him, the true source of peace.
Quote for the Day: “The world is in pieces as long as it refuses the peace that comes from knowing and receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I know that so much is going on in our world, and in my life; but I don't know which other way to turn beside you. So, dear Lord, I come to You, broken in spirit: please calm my inner turmoil Lord, and give me peace, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
