Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 6, 2021
Today’s Text: Matthew 6:9-13
Key Verse: Matthew 6:11 (NASB): “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Each new day is a special gift from God. Indeed, every passing moment is sustained by, and are consisted of His grace. Through the prayer model taught by Jesus, He wants believers in Christ to know that God is the supreme giver of life. That truth should help us approach each passing day and time with sublime simplicity. I was recently waiting in line at the lobby of a busy restaurant and watched a family also waiting in line for an available table. The family has a little boy, possibly 3 years old, who frolics about on the floor of the lobby — totally nonchalant about hunger, or COVID, or any watching crowd. The only thing natural to that boy is his enjoyment of that very moment that providence brings to him.
O how God wants us to return to our childlike enjoyment of his providence one day at a time. He wants us back to the days when we too know no doubt or fear for things we all now worry about. We all probably love the song of Merle Haggard, popularized by Christy Lane, “One Day at a Time.” But how easy has it been for us to follow through that confession amid the springing cares of life? How have we imbibed the consciousness of our Lord’s Prayer — in which we are given a model of desire that acknowledges God as the supreme giver of all things? Have we learned from it that our day-to-day position must be that of a child-like dependence on Him? Can we see that, from the very beginning of the prayer model, Jesus wants us to be mindful of our dependence on God? Are we submissive daily to His will? Is there any doubt that God gives us, in His character, all we ever needed?! O friends, the grace to trust God to supply our daily needs is what we all need. This is how not to gather maggots. It is the way to live in good health rather than worry in advance for what God has already done, or He is doing, or will do.
Quote for the Day: “Our Lord’s Prayer teaches us to overcome ourselves and approach God in conscious submission, quiet contentment, childlike trust, and daily dependence.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, in the place of worries, please give me devotion. Give me such submission that will make Your presence, purpose and providence my daily practice, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
