Today’s Text: Psalms 3:1-8
Key Verse: Psalms 3:3 (NASB): “But You, LORD, are a shield around me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.”
There are several reasons in life to be downcast and dejected. Sometimes we are dissatisfied with things; other times, we are discouraged by people or disappointed by them. The first line of this Psalm tells why David was head-bowed and downcast at the time the psalm was written. What humiliation and shadows could be worse than fleeing from Absalom, his son who betrayed him?! Even when he forgave him, Absalom still deceived the people at the gate and caused an uproar against his father so that he could reign as king in his stead. And of course, sometimes evil seems to triumph over good. Absalom was already making trumpet calls and gathering people to crown him king. This made David feel downcast, and afraid so that he ran for his life.
It is with such heavy heart that David cried out every word of this dirge unto God. Thus, this Psalm is an admonition to every troubled believer: a word of comfort to anyone who is disappointed, depressed, dejected, downcast and desperate for help. God is always a shield to those who trust Him. By “You, LORD, are a shield around me,” the text means that God is indeed a wall of protection that encompasses each one of us roundabout in any desperate moment. Mark this also: God alone is our glory — not family, people, kingdom, throne or things. Therefore, we can boast in God, even when all the false glories depart. We can lift up our heads even when people are scoffing at us. Why? None of those things or men lifted, lifts, or can lift our heads. Only God does. Therefore, no man can hurl our heads down. And, of course, we serve the living God who is the Lifter-up of our head: the One who gives us unmatched edge over all enemies, and enables us to rise tall in/over all troubles.
Quote for the Day: “Each trouble or storm serves divine purpose in our lives: they show us not only what people and things are not. They let us see clearly what things and people truly are. And, also, they reveal who God is to/in us.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, in spite of all David’s foes, he could lie down and sleep. Lord, please help me to make You my sure Hiding-place from all winds — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
