Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 21:8-15
Key Verse: 1 Samuel 21:9 (ESV): “And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”
“I have held many things in my hand, and have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands that I still possess.” Those were the words of Martin Luther, the German Reformer. His words fall in line with the lessons from king David in today’s text. We all admit that everything we have has been given to us by God. But somehow it seems so hard for us to trust Him (God) enough to give things back to Him. We love to grab and hold back. We have recklessly abandoned the scripture tenet that all things are God’s, and from God. Indeed, we can never out give God. He loves the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son? Just how much do you think you ever give back that would be enough or too much to give to Him? What lessons can we learn from this text? Can we know what giving should look like in our everyday lives?
No doubt, Davis left us an example. He slew Goliath, put his armour in his tent, and deposited his sword in the tabernacle at Nob as a sacred relic, and a dedicatory offering to demonstrate that the victory was given by God. Thus, the action is an example of giving: a memorial and a sign to us that we too can give anything; yes, indeed everything back to God, which He first gave to us. And we can learn more. When David was in need of defence during his flight from Saul, nothing else could avail him safe his carefully wrapped offering behind the ephod. Friends, whatever we give to God abounds to us in our account. That is the New Testament metaphor of fruit and recompense upheld in Paul's teachinggs when the apostle was teaching that whatever we give to God returns to us as surplus (Philippians 4:17). Our Lord also taught us to “give and it shall be given unto you” (Luke 6:38).Let us, therefore, always keep this teaching in perspective: place your treasures in Gods hands and He shall keep them for you.
Quote for the Day: “Whatever we place in God's hand is the treasure we truly store up.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please fill me with your light and hope. Give me strength when I am weak, love when I feel forsaken, courage when I am afraid, and the willingness to give when I am in need, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
