Power of a Soft Answer

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, September 27, 2022

Today’s Text: Revelation 3:14-22

Key Verse: Proverbs 15:1 (NASB): “A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.”

We are told in this scripture how a soft answer turns away wrath; whereas grievous words stir up anger. This means that through our words, we can tame any furry. A man of gentle reply will pacify any person to whom he speaks kindly and softly with. No matter the cause of anger, anyone can feel calmer when met with a soft response. Why do we need so much damage control in a friendly or Christian relationship? Why do our words hurt the people we really love? How do best lovers suddenly turn around to be worst enemies? This scripture helps us with a powerful secret that both strengthens our self-control, and gives us freedom from anger. If we allow this deep truth to be integrated into us, we may not be free from hurt, but we will be at peace with ourselves and our world.

Already, there is so much anger in the air—so, people only get angrier when you speak rudely at/to them. Harry Ironside once said, “It is impossible for man to estimate correctly the power for good or evil that lies in the tongue. A kind and gracious word will often disarm a most ill-tempered and wrathful man. A sharp, cutting remark has frequently separated friends dear to each other for years; some trivial circumstance arose which should have been lovingly turned to an occasion for grace and forbearance on the part of each.” If only we could understand the power of a soft answer, our world would be a better place. We would have less hate. Grudges and unforgiveness will lessen and the so many results of rage will be abated. Friends, let us learn from this spiritual proverb: Go mild. Be sober, submissive, and yielding in a bid to deal with severe chide. Then, you can reprove anyone and at the same time turn away wrath.

Quote for the Day: “Show me a man contemptuous in a response; and I will show you a contemptible person.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, pride, harsh words, and hardness of heart are not a fruit of Your Spirit. Help me, Lord, to be loving and gentle like You. Create in me a meek and quiet spirit. Let Your grace in me increase in humility, peacefulness, and living each day in ways that reflect who I am in You — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
