Power Over the Winds

Today’s Text: Mark 4:35-41

Key Verse: Mark 4:39 (ESV): “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”

Whether we like it or not, storms will surely come one way or the other for everyone of us. It is not because we are sinners or righteous; but because it is part of life. For the most part, storms happen out of nowhere. It may be in the form of chaos, negativity, trauma, difficulty, weakness, depression, unexpected job loss, a grim diagnosis, the painful passing of a loved one, or the sorrow of goodbyes. Whatever it is, we can rejoice, today, that storms no matter what they are respond to the word of the Lord. When Christ’s disciples were caught in the storm on the Sea of Galilee, like us, they too were overwhelmed by their trials. They feared and cried upon their sinking boat. But there is always a power at work on our behalf regardless of the nature of our storms. That power does not insulate us from life’s storms, but it subjugates the storms under our feet.

Therefore, whatever our storms may be, we can take comfort in knowing that God holds us fast through them, and has power to calm the storms — whether it is in our hearts or circumstances — He has the power to calm any storm. Those storms that make you to doubt God and question His power or existence will soon be a source of rest and testimony for you. Those panic and unbelief in the face of turbulence do only one thing: they exaggerate the storms without and denigrate the power within us. Friends, today’s scripture is a reminder to us that God is both present during our storms as well as sovereign over them. Those are the spiritual lessons Jesus wanted to teach by allowing the storm. He wanted to show us that as long as He is with us, we have power over the storms.

Quote for the Day: “Except we realize who Jesus Christ truly is — the Creator of the universe — one in whom everything holds together; we may not allow Him to calm our anxious souls.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, calm my spirit, as you calmed the storm; still me, Lord, and keep me from harm and alarm. Let all the tumult within me cease. Please enfold me, today O Lord, in your peace — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
