Today’s Text: 1 John 4:1-6
Key Verse: 1 John 4:4 (ESV): "Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

The Bible is clear about the inherent tension that exists within us, a ceaseless struggle between the desires of the flesh and the aspirations of the Spirit. This internal conflict is a universal human experience, manifesting in varying degrees in each person. To make matters worse, we are even bombarded daily by different forces against our souls. The Bible acknowledges this spiritual lag, but it is not a justification for resignation or complacency. Instead, it serves as a call to fight this enemy (within or without), urging us to prepare for the battles that lie ahead.
The background to this text by John, one of Jesus' twelve apostles, is to warn early Christian against internal and external enemies; and encouraging believers to know that they have the power to overcome evil through their relationship with God, who is greater than any evil force in the world, including persecution, false teachers, the flesh and the devil himself. The remains a valid source of comfort and encouragement to many believers throughout history, reminding them of God's presence and power in their lives.
As Ephesians 6 reminds us, our struggles are not against flesh and blood, but against formidable spiritual forces that seek to undermine our faith and values. To counter these threats, we must arm ourselves with the spiritual armor that God gives. That is our only assurance for the challenges we face. That is how we find solace so that even if and when our struggles are based on sin, we are even confident that "where sin abounds, grace did much more abound" (Romans 5:20). This assurance reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles, for the One who resides within us is greater than any adversary we may encounter in the world.
As we submit ourselves to God and resist the temptations of the enemy, we can have confidence that the devil will flee from us (James 4:7). Moreover, we are promised that sin will not reign over us (Romans 6:14), for we have been empowered by God's indwelling Spirit to overcome the forces of darkness. Therefore, despite our ongoing spiritual warfare, let us draw strength from the knowledge that we are from God, and that the One who is in us is greater than any opposing force in the world. With this assurance, we can face each day with courage and hope, knowing that ultimate victory is ours through Christ Jesus.
Action Steps: Acknowledge the spiritual battle within you and your need for God. Submit yourself to God and resist the temptations of the enemy. Arm yourself with the Word of God. Claim the promise for your victory.
Quote for the Day: "Man's greatest victory is not in the absence of battle, but in the presence of the One who has already triumphed over battles." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I acknowledge the spiritual battle within me and recognize my need for Your strength and armor. Help me to submit myself to You and resist the temptations of the enemy. Equip me with Your Word so that sin will not reign over me. Give me courage and hope as I face each day, knowing that ultimate victory is mine — in Jesus's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
