Today’s Text: Jeremiah 31:15-17
Key Verses: Jeremiah 31:16 (ESV): “Thus says the Lord: “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the Lord, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.”
History makes people cry. It teaches tough. You may not be conversant with the US history; but I like to illustrate today’s meditation by The Trail of Tears — a rather severe and tragic forced displacements of approximately 60,000 Native Americans by the United States government. 16,000 Indians or Cherokees were driven out of their ancestral lands in the cold winter of 1838, and forced to march westward over 1,200 miles of perched lands. This injustice resulted in the deaths of thousands of many of whom had little or no shoes, clothing, supplies or readiness for such a journey. We may not have been in such a forced journey or labor. We may not be in any emergency or compulsion; but our generation is equally ravaged by injustice, heartache and tribulations. Indeed, life today is like living a trail of secret, unnoticed and uncomforted tears.
But we are comforted in today’s scripture that our Lord sees and cares about our tears. And not only is He comforting our weary hearts, but He is commanding us to put off all our wailing and tears. The thoughts that He thinks towards us are thoughts of good and not of evil. “For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5) There is always an antithesis between God’s anger and His favor; between the night of weeping and the coming morning of joy. We may seem to be on a tear trail at the moment, but we have a glorious promise from this text. The one who scattered us, or permitted us to be scattered, knows just where to find us and gather us up again. We may thus be encouraged by this glorious promise to quit crying. The God who will wipe away every tear from our eyes at the end of times, when there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying is the same who comforts us now.
Quote for the Day: “God causes full vegetation to spring forth over a most fatally ruined mountain; He turns mourning into dancing again.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please touch me and fill me with your light and your hope. Give me strength when I am weak, love when I feel forsaken, courage when afraid, comfort when alone, and peace when in turmoil, in Jesus' name. Amen.
