Hebrews 12:1–6 (ESV)
Key Verse: Hebrews 12:1 (ESV) — “Let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
I feel so blessed each morning to be a part of a daily feast of strength through biblical revelation, each day bringing different dose of grace and power. Today, again, heaven calls us to run our race. He already endued us with needed power. But without movement, power leads to stagnation. It is power with direction that produces destiny. We have emphasized that a new year is not merely a reset on the calendar; it is a renewed call to run the race God uniquely marked out for you. You are not called to run another man’s lane; you are called to maximize grace in the lane God has assigned you.
Running your race means embracing God’s course, God’s pace, and God’s grace for your life. Some run ahead of grace and burn out; others lag behind grace and dry out. But those who run in step with the Spirit finish strong. The race set before you in this new year will demand focus, discipline, and endurance. You have already been equipped in Christ with everything needed to start well, continue well, and finish well.
In this year where you are called to wax stronger, you cannot afford to run casually or carelessly. Races are not won by wishers but by runners. This is not the year to jog in and out of obedience; it is the year to fix your eyes on Jesus and lean into the assignment heaven has placed before you. You will face hills, curves, and unknown terrains, but the grace of God will meet you at every stretch of the track.
Be ready to lay aside every weight. Some things are not sinful but are simply too heavy to carry into this new year’s race. Old offenses, unfruitful habits, draining relationships, and time-wasting distractions will all slow your stride. Running light means ruthlessly removing what does not help you run toward Christ and His call. Weights may be familiar, but they are not your friends. If it slows you down spiritually, it must be surrendered at the cross so you can move forward unhindered.
Be ready to deal with clinging sin. Scripture speaks of sin that “clings so closely” — patterns that entangle your feet and trip your progress. Hidden compromise, secret indulgence, and tolerated disobedience will always steal your speed and sabotage your strength. This year, the Spirit is calling you not just to confess sin, but to confront it and cut it off. The blood of Jesus cleanses; the power of the Spirit breaks chains; your willing obedience seals the victory.
Be ready to run with endurance. This race is not a sprint; it is a marathon of faith. Emotional bursts and short-lived excitement cannot sustain you through a full year of spiritual demands and divine assignments. Endurance is built through daily choices, consistent disciplines, and a refusal to quit when the track gets tough. There will be days when your feelings are weary, but your faith must keep moving. Those who keep putting one faith-step in front of another will see God’s promise unfold.
Be ready to fix your gaze on Jesus. Runners who keep looking around lose speed and stability. Comparing your journey to others will only produce pride or discouragement. Your focus must be the Author and Finisher of your faith — the One who started this race with you and will be waiting at the finish line. As you behold Him, you become more like Him. As you look to Him, you draw strength from Him. Your stability in this new year will flow from your steady gaze upon Christ.
Action Steps: Today, pause and ask: “Lord, what weights must I lay aside to run well this year?” Write down the distractions, habits, and patterns that must be dropped. Confess any “clinging sins” and receive fresh cleansing. Then, define three core disciplines (Word, prayer, fellowship, or service) that will keep you running with endurance and focus throughout the year.
Quote for the Day: “Your race is not about speed; it is about faithfulness. Run light, run focused, and you will finish strong.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Let Us Pray: Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for setting a race before me in this new year. Deliver me from every weight and every sin that slows my steps. Teach me to run with endurance, with my eyes fixed on You. Help me to stay faithful in my lane, obedient to Your voice, and responsive to Your leading. Strengthen my heart for the long journey, and let my life this year bring You glory at every stage of the race. In Your mighty name, Lord Jesus, Amen.
