Today’s Text: Luke 4:5-8
Key Verse: Luke 4:8 (ESV): “And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’”
During the days when Canute ruled as king over Denmark, Norway, and England, as is often the case, he was surrounded by those who sought to gain his goodwill through flattery. But he grew weary of their continual flattery and determined to put an end to it. So, he ordered that his throne be carried to the seashore with all his courtiers gathered around him. At the sea, he commanded the tide not to come in, but soon the disobeyed him. So, King Canute rose up from his throne and said, “Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom Heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws.”
I have observed that many of us love to be flattered. We enjoy the vanity of men’s praise even if and when we know they are lying to us. They say things that make us puff up and inject pride in us. That was how they killed Herod. But in today’s scripture, we see how the father of all flatterers tried it on Jesus and got both himself and his flattery scattered. Never yield or bow to the voice of flattery. Never omit to say to those who make you feel like a demigod: “get thee behind me, Satan!” Yes, that’s who they are. This will scatter their present flattery as well as their proposals for future ones. Never allow anyone to worship or praise you. Learn from king Canute, and learn from Christ, the King of kings. Happy new month.
Quote for the Day: “There’s no big deal in Jesus turning stone into bread. He could turn it into bakery; but He would have yielded the flattery of satan.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please prevent me from trying to attract attention. Don't let me gloat over men’s praise. Teach me to be humble of heart, like my Lord Jesus. I pray in His precious name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
