Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, February 9, 2023
Today’s Text: Romans 9:6-18
Key Verse: Romans 9:13 (AMP): “As it is written and forever remains written, “JACOB I LOVED (chose, protected, blessed), BUT ESAU I HATED (held in disregard compared to Jacob).””
God’s word is filled with great examples of how God, in His Sovereignty chooses people based on His divine will, wisdom, purpose, and power. In His secret of the election, He predestined us in Christ Jesus before the creation of the world to be His holy and blameless people. In this election secret, we enjoy the blessings of adoption into sonship. No one understands the mystery by which we found grace while others do not. Like those who are without, we ourselves, at one time, were foolish, disobedient, deceived, and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. It is by the kindness and love of God that we are saved, not because of the righteous things we had done. That’s the mystery of the election.
God chooses who He will and has mercy on whomever He will. He did not choose everyone. Otherwise, everyone would come to faith in Christ. He alone reserves the unfathomable secrets of why He allows us to experience conviction through the Holy Spirit, and He left others to their own untamable free will. Left to us, we all would continue in our rebellion and reject Christ. But He chose to pursue us, convict us of our need for Him, and lead us to faith. We are therefore like Jacob in the mystery of election. God loves us not because of anything in/of us; but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is important for us to know and emphasize so that we may be careful not to take this blessing for granted or in vain. Instead, we must devote ourselves to a life worthy of the secret of our election.
Quote for the Day: “Understanding the secret of our election into God’s kingdom stirs us to a deeper commitment to God’s love and will.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to understand the mystery of how you choose Your men so that I may appreciate Your love better, and to share the gospel without any pressure or fear of failure — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
