Silver and Stone

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, January 31, 2020

Today’s Text: Matthew 3:5-12

Key Verses: Matthew 3:9 (NIV): “And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.”

We have heard silver and gold is mine, and we so like that so well. It’s been quoted so much by us in context and out of context by almost all; but I want you to just wait a minute and ask yourself just one question: what about stone? Don’t we prefer great promises and blessings of gold just as it is in Haggai 2:8?

But have we not placed have premium on wrong values, forgetting that with God gold is not of any more value than stones? Or is gold itself not one of the stones that God raised up? We may all remember how John the Baptist found his hearers too often soothing their consciences in false securities, and quite blind to the danger that threatened them, and so preached to call them to repentance. Our generation needs to get back to the riverside with John and drop all our false hopes, confidence and pursuits.

We have completely misplaced our values for/on wrong things. We pursue silver and gold and almost make them of more value even than our own souls. God is needing us; but we are always out there, pursuing silver and gold. Do you careless if He raises up a stone in your stead? Do you just forgot that He can use anything both to meet your needs, and to do His work? For David, he did not use gold; He used stone. God places value in whatever is available. If you make yourself a pursuer of gold when you are supposed to be available and you are not; then a stone may be of better value than you and your gold.

Quote for the Day: “By spiritual applications, the pebbles on the banks of Jordan in the days of Christ are the people of all nations whom God has raised up as stones for Abraham as children.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, raise others too, but please do not replace me. Always help me to make myself dependable and usable for your glory, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
