Today’s Text: Ephesians 6:10-20
Key Verse: Ephesians 6:14 (ESV): “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
Keeping on one's feet is a most difficult thing to do these days. We now have so much to contend with in all sides and levels — forces that seek to route us from our feet economically, politically and spiritually. But we can be grateful for such scriptures as today’s Bible text, which admonishes us on the hope that we can keep our feet strong through Christ. It assures us that through Jesus, we can stand firm and strong. Through Him, we can withstand all contending forces and maintain a life of victory.
With every opening verse, the Apostle calls us to become more attune to the reality of the ongoing spiritual conflict between us and the cohorts of darkness. Our handling of this truth matters to how we stand or withstand the pressure to fall. This text is a warfare manual for every soldier of Jesus Christ whose interest is to grow wise in understanding and withstanding Satan’s schemes. It is an awareness drill to the fact that being in Christ means being drafted into God’s army in which we engaged battles with an unseen spiritual enemy that seeks to shift our footings and route our standing in Christ.
Serving God does not immune us to attacks or keep us from conflict with forces of evil. Rather, it exposes us to them. Indeed, when the enemy sees that you are living right, he increases the attacks against you to bring you down from your feet. To stand firm, Paul admonishes us to put on the whole armor of God. He simply calls us to stand firm. In 1 Corinthians 16:13 he admonishes us to “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”
Quote for the Day: “Firmness, stability, manliness and vigilance are the spiritual hallmarks of a firmly standing believer." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, Your words say stand firm, and that’s my desire. Please make me strong and immovable. Helps me to grow today into a more godly person. Help me to put all the lies and distractions of the enemy behind, and to stand firm — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
