Sure Mercies

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, January 13, 2022

Today’s Text: Psalm 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalm 23:6 (ESV): “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Most people often take our today’s devotional key verse for granted probably because we have become overly familiar with its use in our regular liturgy. Another possible reason might be because of the words, “surely.” We need to retrace what was in the heart of David, the psalmist when he penned those words. What does he intend with his “surely”? Is he laying claim to any goodness and mercy received of the Lord? Can we ever claim to be really deserving of God’s “goodness and mercy”? Certainly not! The assurance is concrete not because of us or our merit; but based on the integrity of God, the One who bequeaths those goodnesses and mercies upon us.

The fact that God promises it to us makes it sure. And we must never take it for granted. We must always desire to reciprocate God’s mercies by the desire for His house forever. His goodness and mercy are always behind us to atone our ravages of sin and to redeem our ravaged soul. That goodness and mercy is never abstraction in Christ. They are personified in Him, and He follows us every day in every way.

That is supposed to be the response of any man we may trust as a man after God’s heart. In our response to God’s faithful love, despite our doubt, stubbornness, rebellious heart, we enjoy His sure mercies. His abundant love is always there over us. The daily wonderful readiness to bless, defend, protect us, and do us good calls for a response of devotion. We must be resolved to pursue God, who causes His goodness to pursue us—all that, we must do all the days of our lives, and forever. Our internal reflection of the sure mercies of the lord calls for an outward expression of devotion and worship.

Quote for the Day: “We must be willing to follow the God who causes His mercies to follow us in our journey through life.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, lead me each day to make time to pursue You all the days of my life. Awaken a grateful heart within me, and fill me with a desire to serve You all the days of my life — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
