Thanksgiving Pardon

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, November 23, 2021

Today’s Text: Isaiah 55:1-13

Key Verse: Isaiah 55:7 (RSV): “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

While thanksgiving has been reduced to a national fun fair and holiday in the United States, Christians must not lose sight of its origin, reason and essence. We must not miss the lessons that God wants us to learn from thanksgiving each year. He wants us to continue to give thanks for the many blessings received from Him, and for the many blessings still to come. And of course, He wants us to continue to apply ourselves not just to the many blessings, but also to the many lessons that thanksgiving brings.

One of the many blessings and lessons of thanksgiving is pardon. Each thanksgiving, the US Presidency is known for yearly issuance of state official pardon for the National Thanksgiving Turkey. On one of such occasion, a president remarked on how nervous the dressed turkey looked because he thought he was for the state thanksgiving dinner; and unaware he was going to be given a pardon. As sinners, we are in a similar situation. Our sin is a good reason to be uneasy—because apart from God’s pardon, we are doomed, and on our way to eternal damnation. We bring this condition upon ourselves by our wrongdoing, and especially by disobeying the gospel.

This, however, reminds us of God’s great pardon from the wages of sin, and freedom from eternal death sentence. Jesus Christ bore our sins in His body and nailed them on the cross—that we might obtain pardon and be freely reconciled to God. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) O friend! You can let this thanksgiving be your opportunity to accept God’s pardon. Your sins can be forgiven, and you can receive eternal life if you confess Jesus Christ as Lord, believe that God raised Him from the dead (Rom. 10:9), and invite Him into your heart.

Quote for the Day: “Among the many reasons to give thanks to God is His mercy that is enough—yes, more than enough for us—deeper and wider than the ocean.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I am thankful for your mercy and pardon. I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. Please help me Lord to eschew anything that forfeits the pardon You freely offer, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
