Today’s Text: Jeremiah 35: 1-15

Key Verses: Jeremiah 35:6 (ESV): “But they answered, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever.”

While Jonadab’s ancestral rules of “do not drink wine, build houses, or possess vineyards” are man-made and personally motivated to protect his descendants from the unlimited liability of mingling with the wicked society, God takes it as an occasion to teach a salient spiritual lesson to all His chosen people. The lesson is not in the command. God had commanded Jeremiah to buy houses, fields and vineyards. He had also commanded the exiled Jews to do the same. Therefore, the lesson is not in the command. But God wants us to learn from the Rechabites’ acts of faithful obedience to laws that are merely man-made. He had commanded His own people to obey His words and follow His precepts. So, He is commending the conscience of the Rechabites — which He finds to be a missing factor in the church today. If the Recabites obeyed the human authority imposed by their forefather, shouldn’t professed children of God be happy to obey God?

This scripture is written for our example: God is not just speaking to ancient Israel. He demands faithful obedience from all His children. He commands ready obedience, eagerness to receive instruction, and listening ears to all His words. O that this generation would learn that a single act of obedience is better than a thousand day of fasting! Yes, it is better that all prayer mountains and vigils put together. Obedience to God is a proof of our love for Him. Not only does it demonstrate our commitment and faithfulness to Him, it also opens doors of blessings to our lives. God truly wants to bless us: That was why He called Jeremiah’s attention to the acts of the Rechabites; and that is why He is bringing this devotional thoughts our way today.

Quote for the Day: “A single act of obedience is better than a thousand day of fasting.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please make me an obedient child. Let me listen and obey your instructions. Give me the ability to always do whatever you ask me to do — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
