The Confident Confession of the Penitent

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, December 15, 2021

Today’s Text: Micah 7:7-9

Key Verses: Micah 7:8 (ESV): “Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me.

The eager prayer of a tempted saint should always be: Let there be no time O Lord when you will no longer be merciful to me! This is important because there are several forces and voices waiting and seeking every opportunity to take pleasure in, and be glad over, our downfall. This text is a reference to Israel’s exulting foes like the Edomites and Chaldeans that acted in hostile intent towards them. Those enemies reviled God’s people when they erred. The eyes of the Edomites are still very much here. Yes, men of Chaldea are still around. Look around us: aren’t they already rejoining at the fall of the church? Is this text not a spiritual image of a Church in a depressed and fallen state? Are today’s backsliding Christians not been foreshadowed?

O Lord arouse our hearts towards you again. Give us, yet again, the opportunity of the penitent warm Jacob. Cause that we might be that godly remnant that would yet lift our heads in deliverance and genuine divine revival. Birth in us the confident confession of Micah. We have been humbled already before You O God—please just forbid it that we should be humbled before men. O, how they will rejoice over us. Men will scorn us in our downfall, and laugh at our darkness. Folks, all hardened sinners are already in such crisis of gloomy darkness. And so, why won’t they rejoice if we who lay claim to light should slide downhill with them? But upon this oracle and charge, we may all return penitent. And when we do return, we are sure to be abundantly pardoned. Therefore, with confidence we can confess: Rejoice not over me O my enemy! I am bouncing back. These are not vain vaunting in any way. We are confident that once we arise, our light will shine again.

Quote for the Day: “Forlorn, fallen, ridden by darkness, exposed to God’s indignation and scorned by men, like the Church of Micah, we all need a revival of penitence—a return to God.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, lift us up again from under our babel, where our pride has made us to crumble. Lift us up again, Lord, and shine Your light upon us—in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
