The Cross and the Law of Sin and Death

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, April 2, 2021

Today’s Text: Romans 8:1~11

Key Verse: Romans s 8:2 (ESV) — “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

As every Christian commemorates the day on which Jesus was crucified, it is highly important we all reflect on what and why we celebrate. Is it the cross, or the Savior’s death on the cross? Or why is the cross, which was a cruel weapon of judgment something taken as central to our faith? In Rome and to Romans, the cross represents the basest, extremest and highest penalty for wickedness and rebellion. But in the redemption story, the deadly wood actually symbolizes the penalty Christ served to achieve the finished work of grace for us. It was upon the cross that Christ fully paid the price for our redemption.

To the lost and ignorant world, the cross stands for humiliation heaped on criminals. That is why they wonder why anyone would worship a cursed man who hung upon the tree. But for us, we know we were the cursed, and Jesus was sent to that cursed tree to redeem us from the curse of the law. Our text this morning; especially the key text is a great antithesis that describes the mystery of a new spiritual law of life enacted by Christ’s going to the cross in opposition to the law of sin and death. Christ took our place and bore the punishment for our sin on his cross. However, this efficacious work is best taken when we come to Christ. Because it is “”the law of the Spirit of life, in Christ.” And, of course, no man can understand Christ’s saving grace till he understands his cross and embrace its message.

At the heart of the city of London is Charing Cross. Locals simply called it “the cross.” One day a child got lost in the bustling metropolis; and a city police was trying to help him return to his family.

But when the boy could not still figure out his way home, he told the officer, “If you will take me to the cross I think I can find my way from there.” What an apt description of the cross of Christ. It is the starting place of our new life in Christ. It is the place we must constantly revisit to keep our bearings in life. It is a reminder that we are no longer convicted and condemned. But we are free from every law of sin and death.

Quote for the Day: “The cross is not the same as the crucifix. The earlier is empty symbolizing the center of the Christian faith that Christ is no longer hanging on the cross; while the crucifix leaves him there. (Simoniru Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for dying for me on the cross. I yield myself to you anew and rededicate myself to the testimony of your love throughout the world, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer, I wish you and your household a Happy Good Friday!
