“The God of Elijah (Part 1)”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, February 26, 2021

Today’s Text: 2 Kings 2:1-15

Key Verse: 2 Kings 2:14 (KJV) — “And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

Elijah, the Tishbite, was almost a lone voice for God during the reign of King Ahab. But being alone did not stop him from prophesying truth to hid nation and its king. He cautioned Israel against idolatry, and warned king Ahab that there would be a severe drought in the land if he failed to lead the nation back to God. The drought would be so bad that even dews shall fail to form or fall on the land. Despite the gross obstinacy and rebellion of his nation, prophet Eijah in his case, dared to be different. In every way, he lived up to his name and calling. His name already sounds like a personal testimony: “Yahweh is my God.” And his life and approach to God and his calling bear witness to the fact that he truly has Jehovah to be his God. What about you?

For generations, Yahweh has been known as the God of Israel but a person or people must personally decide who God is to them. During the ministry of Elijah, Israel and her king chose to allienate themselves from God. They sought after every other method of worship except the laid down true worship of Jehovah. They were wise in their own eyes and rejected the God of their fathers. They pursued vanity until they provoked God's jealousy and indignation. The God of Elijah is the same still. What we need to check, however, is if today's Elijahs of God has not all forgotten their God!

Elijah’s generation represents ours in many ways. There are millions of career prophets than in the days of Elijah whose impact and voices aligns more with the strange gods of nations rather than represent the God they claim they serve. Elijah lived up to his name; are you living up to your name and calling as a professing Christian? How can people know and understand the God you serve when they already pretty well know you and they can see that you yourself do not know or understand your God? Take a little moment today, meditate on the life of Elijah, and please journey with us for a couple of days more on this topic.

Quote for the Day: “The God of Elijah always stands with His men. Elijahs of God always stand for their God.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to stand for you and speak for you in a generation that has lost its way, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
