Today’s Text: Psalm 29:1-11
Key Verse: ”The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” (vs. 4, ESV)
I was in a midnight prayer teleconference with one of my faithful deaconess in faraway Ibadan Nigeria. We had a lot to deal with spiritually and table before the Lord. We were in the middle of that when she brought one of the most amazing questions I’ve heard in recent times. What does the psalmist mean by “the voice of the Lord breaks the cedars”?
I have no doubt that God has a deep message to pass across, not just to her, but also to you and I. I am so excited how the same God shed great light on this Psalm of David. We serve the God who whispered and set the whole creation in motion by a word. By a whisper, He shatters cedars, carves out lightning bolts, convulses the desert, strips forests bare — that’s our God. The Hebrew word rendered voice in our text is sound, the same usage in the Garden (Genesis 3:8). The seat of sin in Adam and Eve trembled in trepidation when they heard the sound of God walking in the Garden. Even in the creation void, God speaks, and the complex structure of things took their shape.
David may have written this Psalm after witnessing a thunderstorm in action, which possibly ended a three years famine mentioned in 2 Samuel. Is your life marked with noise and terror? Are you going through thick and terrifying darkness? Are thinks too quiet for Confort? God wants you to realize the great and mighty dynamism of His word. When things are too loud, He thunders above all the world’s noise. Where the silence is at its most bitter, and deafening form, the whispering wind of God warms and calms.
Don’t let the devil terrify you, our God is the ruler of all and that there is none like Him. This whole psalm teaches us how God is powerful and sovereign over all the creative order. He crushes all the things that can crush us; and shatters all the we can’t conquer by means of strength. Rise boldly in the power of God’s word. Shun any intimidation and threats. Shake off your dust and beast.
Thinking about this great God should draw sinful men to repentance. For if God’s sound could do all these terrific works in the world, He need not even lift a finger to crush rebellious men more easily than He could a mountain or a cedar tree. He is only patient, not wishing any to perish. However, He (God) is bringing this nudge to us as a voice of hope and comfort regardless of what we may be going through. For it’s so blessed to have this great and true God who rules supreme above every single thing on this planet — not with oppressive arm of tyranny but with significant, endless and boundless love for all.
Quote for the Day: “There is no army, no fortress, no giant that can stand against our God.” (Connilyn Cossette)
Prayer: Dear Lord, make me so swift in seeing and active in savoring the promises of your sovereign grace that in all my sorrows I might never cease to sing your praise, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
