Today’s Text: John 8:12-27
Key Verse: John 8:12 (ESV): “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.””
The Feast of Tabernacles is a celebration in which Israel look forward to the future for a coming salvation. The feast features different ceremonies and lasts for seven days. In first two days m, the porches remained in darkness depicting the days of Israel’s groping in the bondage of Egypt and the wilderness life. As part of the ritual of the Feast, the next five nights feature an illumination in the court to celebrate the drawing of the water and the shedding of those lights through the whole city.
It was in this occasion and context that Jesus found the most auspicious moment to declare, “I am the light of the world.” The power of light is better felt when darkness has been. It doesn’t matter how fast the shades of nights are now drawing on us. We we carry in our bosom an untold brilliance of the light of Jesus. Let us follow the footsteps of our father—Jesus Christ—who declared the true Light upon a night when light was not to shine. As He is light of the world; He also said we are the light of the world.
Our rays are to illumine, not only the Temple, or Jerusalem, or Judæa, or the all those in dispersion, but the whole world. Friends, our world is in its darkest days; and God is waiting on us to release the power of our light. No dark porches should remain. No dark paths. We live in the world’s worst dark days; and it’s our best opportunity to shine our light and let it so shine for all to see.
Quote for the Day: “Light provides brilliant protection to the paths of men. It offers directions to the uncharted courses.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please grant me the humility to allow your light to shine through the cracks in my life. Shine through the broken places in our institutional church and in our world, so that all may be healed. In the name of Jesus, the true light of the world— in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
