Today’s Text: Isaiah 42:1-17
Key Verse: Isaiah 42:16 (NIV): “I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.”
The promise to “lead the blind by the way they have not known” is a metaphor descriptive of how God wants to make darkness light before His children. The same way in which He makes crooked paths and things straight. These words are a prophecy already fulfilled by the coming of Christ, who is the light of the world. He said, To claim the fulfillment of this promise, Jesus claims to be Light of the World in John 9:5. He said: “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Also, in John 9:39, Jesus affirmed that He came to this world so that the blind may see.
The dualism painted of light and darkness in the gospel is an antithesis that has a symbolic reference to today’s Isaiah’s prophesy. The meaning and is essential to understanding the permanent conflict between light and darkness, which stand for good and evil respectively. Light is the symbol of truth and righteousness, while darkness stands for falsehood and evil. Knowing and following Jesus leads to the path of righteousness. Rejecting Him (Jesus) is belonging to the dark. Before we came to Christ, darkness overtook us; and our best description is “the blind.” However, in the very moment of decision, when we stretch out our hands to the Savior, He takes a hold of our hands and leads us to/in/through the path of righteousness—for His name's sake.
Quote for the Day: “Being blind and/or walking in darkness includes, but is not limited to sinning; but, at large, it is rejecting God's message of eternal life through Christ.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for being our light. I thank you for the confidence I have through Your Son to say with King David that You are my light and lamp. Thank you for illuminating my darkness. And I ask that Your light of hope will continue to shine through me in this dark world — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
