The Power of Worshipful Trust in God

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, February 4, 2023

Today’s Text: Matthew 8:1-4

Key Verse: Matthew 8:2 (ESV): “And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.""

Sometimes life puts us in danger of being disadvantaged. We face things that are beyond or out of control — things that we can’t even begin to explain. But before us today is the story of one leper that teaches us that if we ever feel that way, our faith should move us to thrust our selves on God and cry out to Him. If we do, we can change any situation. As a leper, from cultural perspective, this man is viewed as being under God's punishment. He is considered a social outcast and was forced to live outside the city or in a separated area. He was even disqualified to stand before such a holy rabbi as Jesus. But, we are so blessed to have his example intimate us with the benefits of faith, worship and prayer.

This text teaches us that there is nothing amiss in our lives that cannot melt away when the power of genuine worship is deployed. Our worship endears us to God. It opens forth a living hope and releases the power of faith. The words, “if you will, you can make me clean” are words that exhibit not just this man’s great faith; but also his attitude of worship. They show his total surrender on the will of Christ. That is the formula for worship: to access the throne of God’s mercy, from where healing power flows, we must come with worshipful trust in the power of Jesus to save. We must come with dependence upon His sovereign will. Jesus Himself, who taught us to pray “thy will be done,” prayed the same at Gethsemane: “not my will but thine be done.”

Such release of trust in God always cleanses off our leprous life. Hope makes not a-shame. “If you will” are not words of a doubter, but a reflection of total trust that nothing can stop his cleansing as long as the Lord wills it. And, nothing of his struggle, effort or religiosity may avail if Jesus wills it not. No time did anyone approach Jesus with such surrender and audacious faith and went away disappointed. Such worshipful trust is wanted today. It is time to understand that, indeed, without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he truly is, and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Quote for the Day: “God’s faithful children must learn to let faith rather than fears decide their approach to prayer. Most prayers offered today are fueled by fear rather faith. (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please grant me grace to accept my limits; and the faith to trust that You are without limits. Give me the willingness to trust Your will in my life’s struggles and with my burdens — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
