The Unchanging God in a Changing World

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, January 20, 2020 Today’s Text: James 1:12-18

Key Verse: James 1:17 (ESV): ”Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

Our world is doubtlessly marked by change and shadows. And though science has done so well to bring us lights, yet we can’t escape our shadows. James’s allusion to the alternations of light and shadow puts in mind dynamics of changes which the physical “lights” undergo, and which even the spiritual lights are liable to, as compared with God. Howbeit, today’s scripture confronts us with the unchanging faithfulness of God. He is described as having no shadow of turning. Literally, He does not eclipse as does the moon by the shadow of the earth, or as the sun by the shadow of the moon.

Young as I am, I can testify to how my generation has been marked by variations—how fashions, people, governments, earth's topography and worse men change. But God remains true to His immutable testimony of Numbers 23:19. David compared Him to a stable, solid, reliable, firm, and immovable Rock. When He revealed Himself to Moses, He said "I am that I am" (Exodus 3:14). That is, not your doubt or Pharaoh’s, or the people’s loud cry can change me. He is the great "I AM"— not "I was" or "I will be;" from eternity past to future, He remains the same. Let this comfort and encourage you. Nothing gets in His way to force Him into wavering.
