The Unstoppable Star

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, December 21, 2021

Today’s Text: Matthew 2:1-20

Key Verses: Matthew 2:13 (ESV): “When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

Christmas was not celebrated until A.D. 353 when Pope Julius I authorized December 25 as the day of celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Almost 4 centenaries after His Star was seen, it was still becoming clear—even brighter today. Professor Charles Follen lit the candles on the first Christmas tree in America in A.D. 1832, which many did not know was a symbol of the light and Star that shined from Bethlehem. Nations rage and kings continue to imagine vain things against the light of Christ; but, still today, all the elaborate lights and candles give witness to the unstoppable power of the light of Jesus Christ today.

See how long it’s been since 1832; see how longer still it’s been since 353, and longer still from that silent holy night when men who sat in darkness first saw and followed the unstoppable Star of Bethlehem. See how Herod tried hard and died still trying but Jesus the Light of all men could not be stopped. See how hard the postmodern world try to extinguish the light of the Star, yet, the harder they tried, the brighter it shines. As we draw nearer to A.D. 2021’s commemoration of the first appearance of that Star, and we are caught up in the midst of all the excitement of lights and candles, do we understand the meaning and reason for our decorations; or we drawn into a culture that seeks to stop the true Star from shining on our hearts? The light of Christ is unquenchable. We are alive today, given yet another opportunity to follow, embrace, celebrate and venerate Him.

Quote for the Day: “The light of Christ is unquenchable. We are alive today, given yet another opportunity to embrace, celebrate and venerate Him.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me the humility to allow your light to shine through the cracks in my life. Shine through the broken places in our nation; shoddy places in our church and through the darkness in our world. Heal our darkness by Your light — in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
