Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, September 5, 2022
Today’s Text: Genesis 28:10-22
Key Verse: Leviticus 19:13 (ESV): “You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning.”

You do not need a trade or labor union to know that God cares about weak and poor people. All through the Testaments, He always pitches tents with the poor, the weak and the oppressed. As Americans celebrate the Labor Day today, we are reminded of the fact that God sides with us in our pain. In the Bible days, laborers were generally poorer people who lacked lands to till for themselves, or capital to raise flocks or crops. Therefore they were always dependent on immediate payment for their work, and thus needed to be paid at the close of each day. That is why God commanded their employers—or people who have the power to dictate terms and conditions of labor such as politicians or government officials—not to take advantage of their vulnerabilities. The practice of owing workers, or depriving them has always been a flaw of the human society from time immemorial; but God says these practices are illegal and unacceptable.
On the part of the laborers, God’s promises are clear: You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you. God always reward those who work hard. That blessing comes in a different ways: God blessed hard workers with satisfaction and peace. Therefore, on this Labor Day, we are hereby encouraged to continue to uphold work ethic consistent with godliness and praise worthiness. That is the only way you’d deserve whatever blessing God gives at the end of any faithful labor. And indeed, wether you are a planter (employer of labor) or a waterer (the employee), 1 Corinthians 3:8-9 says we are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. Therefore, our relationship should always reflect and promote oneness and fairness, and make no room for oppression and inequality.
Quote for the Day: “Whether you an individual employer of labor, a politician or government official, God forbids anyone to hold back the wages of a hired worker.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, You are the God of justice, we pray this Labor Day for all good workers, that they would receive fair reward and treatment in their work. Make a way for those who seek gainful employment. Open the door for all immigrants, and sustain the retirees that depend on rewards of past labor — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
