Thinking about Mary: The Christ, the Christmas and the Characters (Part Three)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, December 13, 2022

Today’s Text: Luke 1:26-38

Key Verse: Luke 1:38 (KJV): “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”

Perhaps, the greatest lesson from the life of Mary is how God uses ordinary people who follow His plan to do the impossible, and accomplish His most glorious purpose on earth. How amazing would it be if we all live prepared to be used by God. As a young girl from Nazareth, Mary’s social status suggests no ray of hope for anything near the favor she received but God doesn't care about our social status. Youths and students must learn from this—older folks as well. No matter our age, we must all learn the power and secret of putting our faith in God; and especially, of living our lives as servants of the Lord.

Mary’s life urges all of us today to open our minds and hearts to God. To do that, we must begin to live more fully conscious of our purpose here on earth, which is to submit fully to God’s plan regardless of whatever it is. When she said, “Be it unto me according to your word’l Mary demonstrated faith, initiative and courage. Her concern for life and personal vision melted away in submission to whatever God seems best for her. This is a challenge to our rigidly organized modern lifestyle that almost never give respect for Christ's own mission above ours. Regardless of the charge from scripture and the admonition from pulpits, our rigid lifestyle always takes preeminence still.

Quote for the Day: “Mary represents calm confidence in God’s purpose against man’s position. She exemplifies courage not to be touched by the vanity of what man will say when God has said.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me a heart like Mary, and teach me her secret. Give me the grace to accept that you are all that matters: so that whether you make me abound, or leaves me abase, your will is always still the best for me — in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
