Today’s Text: Luke 9:57-62

Key Verse: Luke 9:58 (ESV): “And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

This passage portrays the omniscient ability of Jesus to see through the hearts and motif of men. The Lord knows or foreknows all things. While the invitation to enter the kingdom is lavish and open, the kingdom service requires some stringent dressing. The Master of the service recognizes those who seek to enter His service for personal gain. He sees through the heart and knows those men and women who, more or less, are motivated by the spirit of Judas Iscariot. His foundation stands sure: He knows those who are His. Men of untaught heart, untutored spirit, and unteachable disposition may draft themselves; but are not inducted to the service of Christ’s kingdom. They may say to Him on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ But, then He will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Today’s text helps us understand why: there is the heart-dress that heaven is constantly seeking to qualify the next disciple. Friend, who are you among these men? Take a careful look at the dispositions of the sanguine man that enthusiastically submitted himself for discipleship. A natural man would applaud him as moved by the Holy Spirit, but we already know that the Lord does not look as a man looks. Men consider facts of appearance. God considers the heart. God’s kingdom is not recruiting any more boastful volunteers. Nothing of misguided zeal may qualify any man in the holy schemes of God. With this text, Jesus is teaching us that the core of His kingdom matter is not ability, agility, or availability: it is the eternal worth of the kingdom itself. The business of God is not to be engaged with selfish passion; no, not with indecision, and certainly not enterprised at our own leisure. None of us should dare to seek the kingdom of heaven at his own time and terms.

Quote for the Day: “The first step to the foot of Christ’s cross commences a course that spans and determines eternity. Our faculties must not be infant. Our disposition cannot be carnal.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, you are all-knowing and full of wisdom. Take me through Your masterful plan. Make me your true disciple in every thought, word, deed and motive. Give me the heart of a disciple in all I do — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
